In this time of national reckoning over racism in the U.S., many of us are drawn to engage in deep personal learning and introspection to better understand the workings of racism in American society and our role in dismantling it.

In this six-session series, we will take a deep look at understandings of race and racism, using a variety of readings, recordings, interpersonal exercises, and open-hearted conversation. We will explore emerging understandings of racism, implicit bias and unconscious participation in racist systems, and the question of white privilege for white Jews. Finally, we will consider how Jewish teachings about teshuvah apply to our own anti-racist work as individuals, and about collective atonement for racism throughout American history.

Collaboratively designed and taught by Rabbi Amy Eilberg and Flaurie S. Imberman, the weekly sessions will meet on October 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, and 19 from 7-8:30 PM. The class is open to a maximum of 20-25 people who are committed to attending all sessions (if at all possible).

Wherever you are on your journey to understanding racial injustice, you are welcome in this class!  We will employ best practices to create an atmosphere of respect, safety, and trust, so that all of us are comfortable. The class will offer opportunities for every one of us to learn and grow.

Please note that this class is a 6 week series; participants need to register once  by using this form, so that the teachers can send you materials which you will find useful for the first class.

While we hope you can attend all six sessions, we understand that life happens and you may miss one class. Our best hope is that you will ask us for the link to the recording of the class, so you can catch up and feel included.
