Education (KEnnections)

We have many exciting developments to share this year, including a new format and a new name (“KEnnections”) for our youth enrichment program; a special 3-week “mini-mester” on metamorphosis and insect science; a volunteer Mitzvah Corps for 6th and 7th graders; new programming for teens, and more!

KEnnections K-7th Tuesday/Saturday Enrichment Program

Both Tuesdays and Saturdays will now be open for K-7th grade. We will be switching to a new format for our program, now called KEnnections: students will have the opportunity to learn their Jewish content through different enrichment modes (i.e. art, music, drama, coding, cooking, etc.). There will be 2-3 options per grade groupings each trimester, and students will have the ability to select which class they would like to take. The curricular content is still the main focus—this is simply a way to add value, enjoyment, and hopefully help students internalize and retain what they are learning. Our Hebrew curriculum and classes will remain the same and will continue to be offered for 3rd-7th grade only.

Our Tuesday program will be held from 3:45pm – 6:45pm (including a family dinner).

Our Saturdays (9:30am – 12:15pm) will remain the same as last year, but with an added emphasis on our prayer studies. We are excited to be working with Rabbi Sarah Graff’s new Siddur (written for Camp Ramah), and there will be activities and dedicated time for learning both how to recite the prayers as well as the meaning behind them.

6th and 7th Grade Mitzvah Corps

This year we are offering an additional educational program for our 6th and 7th graders. As part of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah process, it is important to have an opportunity to participate in hands on community service projects. With this in mind, students who register for Mitzvah Corps will meet one Sunday per month to support different local organizations. This is a great way to fulfill the B’nai Mitzvah project requirement, learn more about areas you can volunteer in, and make a difference. Contact Sarah Miller for more specific details.

First Fridays

This year, we will continue to build community and expand our students’ education on Shabbat. First Fridays take the place of Shabbat morning programming by offering a different Shabbat experience. Students and families are asked to join us once a month for these special programs.

Last year’s First Friday themes included Jurassic Shabbat, Legoland Shabbat, and South American Safari Shabbat, among others. Join us for a creative, meaningful family-friendly celebration of Shabbat!

Kadinkers for 4th/5th Grade, and Shabbat Schmooze for K-3rd Grade

Building community and creating friendships is a big part of the educational process. With this in mind, we have two annual programs for both our 4th and 5th graders as well as our K-3rd graders. Kadinkers is the name for our 4th and 5th grade social group that meets once in the Fall and once in the Spring for a fun outing.

Teen Program for 8th -12th Grade

This year, we are excited to welcome our amazing new Youth Engagement Coordinator, Elena Solomon! Elena and our Director of Education, Sarah Miller, have designed programs with opportunities for teens to have deep discussions (which help form deeper friendships), as well as lots of fun activities to get everyone laughing and bonding. We know that time is an issue, so we have limited our programs to no more than twice a month.

Safe and honest discussions on important topics are a special, distinguishing aspect of KE’s teen program. We know that when you have a good conversation with someone, it creates a pipeline to true friendship. It’s also easy to get so caught up in the craziness of life that we don’t stop to reflect on who we are, where we are going, and what really matters. For all of these reasons, we have carved out time each Saturday night for this piece as well.
